SATE MEMENG
Sate memeng is a kind of special satay from Medan. Sate memeng is very
famous in Medan because it is very delicious. A lot of people including artists like
eating sate memeng. Sate memeng business began in 1945. The pioneer of sate
memeng at that time was Mr. Muhammad Saimin. Why do people call it ‘sate
memeng’? At the beginning, Mr. Saimin’s clients called him Memeng. Since then,
all of his clients named his satay as ‘Sate Memeng’. Sate memeng is made from
beef, lamb or chicken. The satay is soft or tender and piquant.
There are several types of sate memeng. They are meat satay, liver satay,
lung satay, and so on. Sate memeng is served with peanut sauce. The difference
is that the peanut sauce for sate memeng is more watery. The sauce is like peanut
broth. The peanut sauce is watery because the Medanese like watery sauce. The
owner of this satay business now is Mr. Zulkarnain. He is Mr. Muhammad Saimin’s
son.
If you are in Medan and want to eat sate memeng, you can go to Mr. Zulkarnain’s
satay stall at JI. Irian Barat No. 1, Medan. His satay stall opens from 6 p.m.
to 1.30 a.m. in the morning. You can eat sate memeng with lontong. Besides, you
can also eat sate memeng with noodles.

A. READING
1. Read Nadia’s e-mail to Bonar below and answer the questions.
Hello Bonar, thank you for your invitation to your birthday party. I’d like
to attend your birthday party on Sunday next week, but I’m afraid I can’t. My
cousins, my uncle, and my aunt from Jakarta are going to come to Medan on
Saturday. They are going to spend their holiday in Medan. Because that will be
the first time for my cousins to come to Medan, I am going to accompany them
to visit some tourism places in and around Medan.
According to my father, my uncle and his family are going to come to
Medan by airplane. They are going to arrive in Medan on Saturday morning.
So, in the evening, we are going out to eat dinner. On Sunday, we are going to
visit Maimoon Palace, North Sumatra Museum, Bukit Barisan Museum, Rahmat
Museum, and Medan Zoo. We are going to go to Maimoon Palace, Bukit Barisan
Museum, North Sumatra Museum, and Rahmat Museum on the same day because
the tourism objects are in Medan City. On Monday, we are going to go to
Lake Toba to enjoy the view of the beautiful and famous lake.
My cousins like seeing animals. Therefore, we are going to Medan Zoo the
following day. We can see various kinds of protected birds, crocodiles, tigers,
and so forth in the zoo. It takes about twenty minutes from the city center
because the zoo is only ten kilometers from the city center. We are going to
stay at home on Wednesday to take a rest. Then, on Thursday, we are going
to go to the beaches swim. Therefore, once again, I am very sorry because I
can’t go to your birthday party.
Yours,
Nadia

SOTO MEDAN
Soto medan is a special food from Medan, North Sumantra. The ingredients
of soto medan are chicken thighs, bay leaves, lemongrass, lime leaves, galangal,
coconut milk, lime juice, shallots, spring onions, garlic, pepper, coriander, turmeric
powder, salt, and sugar. How to make soto medan?
First of all, prepare a piece of bay leaf, a stalk of lemongrass, three pieces
of lime leaves, one centimeter of galangal, a litre of water, two tablespoonfuls of
fried shallots, a stalk of spring onion, and a can of coconut milk, five shallots, three
cloves of garlic, pepper, a tablespoonful of coriander, a teaspoonful of turmeric
powder, one centimeter of ginger, two candlenuts, salt, and sugar.
After you prepare the ingredients above, start cooking the food. Wash the
chicken, and then pour the lime juice over it. Leave it for about ten minutes. Then,
wash it again. Simmer the chicken in a litre of water together with salt, bay leaf,
lemongrass, lime leaves, and the galangal. Cook until the chicken is tender. Take
it out from the stock and leave it cool. Separate the chicken from the bones and
shred it finely.
Meanwhile keep cooking the stock with low heat. Fry and then set aside the
chicken. Sauté the spices in the remaining oil for about two minutes until fragrant.
Put the fried spices into the chicken stock. Cook until the spices are absorbed.
Then, add the coconut milk and cook it for several minutes. Serve it with rice, potato
croquettes (perkedel), prawn cracker and garnish with fried shallots and spring onion.

Maafkan, Lupakan lalu bergeraklah maju. Kasih itu berkembang dari memberi dan memaafkan

"WE CAN BE AS WE CAN"

Like a tree our growth depends upon our ability to soften, loosen, and shed boundaries and defenses we no longer need.

Trees grow up through their branches and down through their roots into the earth. They also grow wider with each passing year. As they do, they shed the bark that served to protect them but now is no longer big enough to contain them. In the same way, we create boundaries and develop defenses to protect ourselves and then, at a certain point, we outgrow them. If we don’t allow ourselves to shed our protective layer, we can’t expand to our full potential.

Trees need their protective bark to enable the delicate process of growth and renewal to unfold without threat. Likewise, we need our boundaries and defenses so that the more vulnerable parts of ourselves can safely heal and unfold. But our growth also depends upon our ability to soften, loosen, and shed boundaries and defenses we no longer need. It is often the case in life that structures we put in place to help us grow eventually become constricting.

Unlike a tree, we must consciously decide when it’s time to shed our bark and expand our boundaries, so we can move into our next ring of growth. Many spiritual teachers have suggested that our egos don’t disappear so much as they become large enough to hold more than just our small sense of self—the boundary of self widens to contain people and beings other than just “me.” Each time we shed a layer of defensiveness or ease up on a boundary that we no longer need, we symbolically become bigger people. With this in mind, it is important that we take time to question our boundaries and defenses. While it is essential to set and honor the protective barriers we have put in place, it is equally important that we soften and release them when the time comes. In doing so, we create the space for our next phase of growth.

kita temukan
kita perhatikan
dan semuanya membawa kita pada satu permenungan
bagaikan pejiarah di atas padang yang luas
membentang............
mengarahkan kita pada satu jalan
jalan yang mampu menghidupi kita...........
itulah pilihan.............
dan pilihan itulah yang mesti kita jalani
dengan semangat dan percaya diri............
